When to visit Egypt depends on what you actually plan to do there. Walking Cairo, sailing the Nile and flying a balloon over Luxor at dawn each have a different answer, and this guide gives all three.
Egypt’s three travel seasons
October to April, the main season
Cairo runs at daytime highs of around 19 degrees in January, rising to the high twenties by October and April at either end of the season. That is the difference between enjoying the Giza plateau and enduring it. Upper Egypt, meaning Luxor and Aswan, is warmer than Cairo all year, and in winter that is a benefit rather than a problem: Luxor sits in the low to mid twenties through January and February.
The thing people consistently underpack for is the cold. Desert nights in December and January drop sharply once the sun goes down, sometimes to single figures, and it is colder still on the river after dark. Bring a proper warm layer.
May to September, the hot months
Luxor and Aswan in high summer regularly pass 40 degrees, and the middle of the day at an unshaded temple is not something to plan a schedule around. Travel is still possible, and both prices and crowds fall, but the shape of the day has to change: sites early, a long break through the afternoon, then out again in the evening.
The Red Sea coast handles the summer far better than the Nile valley, and it is when the sea itself is at its warmest.
The shoulder weeks either side
Late September and early May are the underrated windows. You get most of the weather benefit, noticeably fewer people, and better availability at short notice.

The Abu Simbel alignment is worth planning around if your dates are flexible. Twice a year the rising sun reaches through the entrance of the Great Temple and lights the statues in the inner sanctuary. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site running from Abu Simbel to Philae.
The Best Time to Visit Egypt
Cairo works from October through April, and November and March are the two standouts: warm enough for a full day outdoors, cool enough that Giza and Saqqara are not an endurance test.
Cairo copes with summer better than Luxor does, because more of what you do there is indoors or after dark. Museums, Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo and the restaurants all work in July. The pyramid plateau in July is still the pyramid plateau in July.
Opening hours at the major sites shift with the season and during religious holidays. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities publishes current details for each site on its official monuments portal.
The best time to go to Egypt for a Nile cruise
October to April, for the same reasons, with one extra factor: a cruise puts you in Upper Egypt, the hottest part of the country, and a great deal of the day is spent on open decks and at unshaded temple sites with no relief from the sun.
December and January give the most comfortable temperatures and the busiest river. October, November and March give slightly warmer weather and noticeably fewer boats working the same stretch of water.
The best time for a sunrise balloon flight in Luxor
Balloons over Luxor fly all year, but they fly on the weather rather than the calendar. Flights are delayed or cancelled for wind, and that is the pilot applying the limits correctly, not a booking going wrong.
Winter mornings are generally the most reliable for clear, still air. Whatever month you choose, the practical move is the same: schedule the flight for an early morning of your stay in Luxor, never the last one. If the weather moves it, you still have a day in hand. The best time for an evening on the Nile in Cairo
This is the one thing on the list that gets better in the months everyone avoids. An evening sail is cool when the day was not, and from May to September it is one of the few genuinely comfortable ways to spend a Cairo evening outdoors.

The best time for the Red Sea
The Red Sea inverts the rest of the country. June to September, the months to avoid in Luxor, are when the water is warmest and the coast is at its best. Hurghada, El Gouna, Marsa Alam and Sharm el Sheikh all stay usable through the winter too, but the sea is cooler and the evenings need a layer.
This is why a summer trip to Egypt often works best split in two: temples early in the morning at the start, then the coast for the second half.
Ramadan, Eid and Egyptian public holidays
Ramadan moves through the Gregorian calendar by roughly eleven days each year, so check it against your travel window rather than assuming a season. In 2027 it is expected to begin in early February, though the exact start depends on the moon sighting and is confirmed only shortly beforehand.
Sites and museums stay open during Ramadan, but hours shift, some restaurants close during daylight, and the rhythm of the day changes completely: quiet afternoons, then cities that come alive after sunset. It is not a reason to avoid Egypt. Many travellers find it the most interesting time to be there. It is a reason to know it is happening before you book.
Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha are the busiest domestic travel periods of the year, and sites are crowded with Egyptian families. Coptic Christmas falls on 7 January. Sham el Nessim, the Egyptian spring festival, follows Coptic Easter and moves each year.

Egypt’s peak season and Egypt’s best weather are the same months, which is the whole difficulty. If crowds matter to you more than a few degrees, take the shoulder weeks. November and March are genuinely good, not a compromise.
