Every guide holds a licence from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which requires a university degree in Egyptology, archaeology or a related field. Guiding at Egyptian sites without one is illegal, and at the sites themselves it is rarely checked — which is precisely why it is worth asking.
Restricted sites are not a queue-jump. The Osiris Shaft, Wahtye's Tomb, Abdeen Palace and the interior of the Great Pyramid outside public hours cannot be entered on a ticket at any price. We apply for permission per party and per date, which is why these visits need notice and cannot run as group departures.
